THE Western Downs Regional Council will conduct an independent review of its water management, after an E.coli scare that forced Chinchilla residents to boil their drinking supply last week.
Former Queensland Urban Utilities CEO Ian Maynard will start the review on March 6 to establish what went wrong with the water quality and how it can be avoided in the future.
"We take the quality of our water extremely seriously and this is why we have engaged Ian Maynard, a man with excellent credentials in this area to ensure our systems improve wherever they can," Mayor Paul McVeigh said.
"The council wants to guarantee that we are doing everything we can to consistently ensure the highest standards in our water division and this independent review will tell us how we can achieve that."
Questions surrounding the council's knowledge of the problem surfaced this week after the Darling Downs Public Health Unit released a statement saying it was alerted about the problem on Thursday, February 22.
Cr McVeigh said the WDRC alerted the public a full three days later on the Sunday.
Chinchilla has now become the third town in the Western Downs region to receive a water boil alert in recent months.
