POLICE got an unexpected surprise when they responded to a Triple 0 call from a concerned neighbour who had heard a woman screaming "murder".

Inspector Damian Irvine said Kirwan police in Townsville responded to an emergency call at 8am Wednesday after a neighbour feared the worst after hearing a disturbance.

"The caller had heard a woman yelling murder, murder, murder and a male yelling shut up," Insp Irvine said.

"The caller heard loud banging noises and decided to call police.

"Police attended and it was discovered that in reality it was a fight between a cat and a dog."

Shocked at the police's arrival, a man at the house told police that there had been a fight between their cat and their two dogs in the back yard.

He revealed that one of the dog's names was "Murder" - explaining the misunderstanding.

The Great Dane cross named Murder and the German Shepherd named Riley had been chasing the cat, Shadow around the back yard which resulted in the owner having to tackle "Murder" after "Shadow"scrambled up a tree.

There was no assault charges laid even though "Murder" had a battle scar across his nose for his quarrel with the cat.

The animals are understood to have spent some time apart until tempers died down and harmony returned to the house.

"It turned out to be quite funny but the lady who reported it to police did the right thing by calling police," Insp Irvine said,

"She wasn't to know what was going on."

Murder the dog might need a new name.
